The National Cancer Institute awarded investigators at 亨茨曼癌症研究所 a grant totaling more than $3 million to conduct a 临床试验 to see if combining creatine monohydrate supplementation 和 resistance exercise training helps preserve muscle in people who have metastatic 前列腺癌. Loss of muscle mass is a major side effect of treatment for 前列腺癌. Creatine monohydrate supplementation, a naturally occurring molecule in the body, helps combat fatigue 和 provides more energy, 从而得到更好的锻炼. 研究ers hypothesize that taking creatine monohydrate supplementation while participating in resistance training will preserve muscle mass.

为了测试这个, 200 men with metastatic 前列腺癌 will take part in a 52-week, 双盲, 安慰剂对照, r和omized trial during treatment. One group of patients will receive the creatine monohydrate supplementation 和 the other will receive a placebo. Both groups will engage in an individualized, 监督, telehealth-delivered resistance training program with the Personal Optimism With Exercise Recovery (POWER) fitness program 亨茨曼癌症研究所. Study participants 和 researchers will not know who is getting the supplement or placebo.

“It’s important for patients to keep the muscle mass they already have to help maintain independence, 生活质量, reduce other cancer treatment-related side effects.”
Adriana Coletta, PhD, MS, RD

“Once patients start receiving treatment for their metastatic 前列腺癌, they can no longer gain muscle mass because the treatment blocks the 和rogen signaling, which helps to make testosterone,” Adriana Coletta, PhD, MS, RD,是 Cancer Control 和 Population Sciences Program 亨茨曼癌症研究所, assistant professor in the Department of Health 和 Kinesiology 在 犹他大学, one of the lead investigators of the 临床试验. “If your body doesn’t make testosterone, you can’t build muscle mass, but you can lose it. It’s important for patients to keep the muscle mass they already have to help maintain independence, 生活质量, reduce other cancer treatment-related side effects. Also, more muscle mass is also linked to higher survival rates.”

Coletta wishes to thank the patients who participated in the 12-week trial that provided preliminary data for this large grant, along with members of the Salt Lake City 前列腺癌 Community Support Group, who assisted in the planning process of the proposed trial. She would also like to thank the POWER program, 亨茨曼癌症研究所’s 临床试验s office, her investigative team members: Neeraj Agarwal医学博士, physician-scientist 亨茨曼癌症研究所 和 co-lead on this trial, 本杰明·莫恩,医学博士,药学博士, Manish Kohli,医学博士, physician-scientists 亨茨曼癌症研究所, Neli Ulrich,博士,硕士, chief scientific officer 和 executive director of the comprehensive cancer center 亨茨曼癌症研究所, 乔纳森·奇普曼博士,是 Cancer Biostatistics Shared Resource 亨茨曼癌症研究所.

“This is an exceptional collaboration between exercise scientists 和 top 临床试验ists 亨茨曼癌症研究所” Ulrich. “Together this team will find important answers for men with 前列腺癌.”

“It’s so exciting that we now have the support 和 resources to take this research to the next level,科莱塔说. “This is just the start of what’s to come from our group to improve 生活质量 for cancer patients.”

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute including P30 CA042014 和 亨斯迈癌症基金会.
